Increasing Your Computer Security
It’s hard to imagine leading our everyday lives without a computer, right?
We trust these machines for everything from
Internet searches to storing business documents. But being so dependent on computers also has its downside, especially when it comes to small business.
An article on Reuters says that merchants are having a hard time with online and computer security. The rapid evolution of technology makes it hard for users to defend their systems against new attacks. Big corporations have the funds to have an IT department to take care of intruder detection, malware surveillance, and virus repairs. Many of their smaller counterparts don’t have the luxury of having an IT department at their beck and call.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recommends beefing up on security if you use the same computer for invoices and e-mails. Many small business owners don’t know the basics of computer security, and the NIST understands this. That’s why it announced that the FBI and SBA have teamed up to offer computer security workshops around the country. So far, they’ve held sessions in Knoxville, TN, and Fort Lauderdale, FL. For more information about workshop places and dates, check out the NIST page.
Meanwhile, if you want to determine if your computer security is up to speed, Cisco Systems offers a simple but effective 4-step checklist.

Computer security, virus protection, and backup solutions are three very important computer protection technologies that are often lacking or inadequate in many small businesses. Putting them in place is cheap insurance against the risks of losing all of ones data.
