Giving Back

Business isn’t just about making profits and excelling in your industry.  An important part of any business is giving back and being part of a cause.  Some businesses, such as TOMS Shoes which donates a pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair that is purchased and Newman’s Dressing, who’s profits after taxes go to progressive causes, are based on philanthropy.  Other companies are philanthropic in other ways, like Tide, who’s developed the Loads of Hope program that “bring[s] mobile laundromats to areas devastated by natural disasters and clean[s] residents’ clothes at no charge,” and L’Oreal Paris, who has donated over $18 million dollars to the fight against ovarian cancer over the past 12 years.

You don’t have to be a big business to give back, as there is a multitude of ways for small business owners to support charitable causes.

Find a Cause

There are various causes that are worth fighting for and it’s important that the cause your business supports is one you truly believe in.  Looking through a list of charities can help you decide what your philanthropic movement will be.

Find a Way

Once you’ve decided on a cause, or cause(s), next it’s time to determine how you will support the cause.  Raising and donating money is a great way to give back.  Small business owners can choose to donate a portion of all sales or to even host an event or fundraiser where all proceeds go to charitable causes.  You can also give back by choosing to donate time and/or services, particularly services that your business specializes in.

  • Thanks Chrystal, for helping small businesses become aware that they too can become philanthropically involved in their communities. All too often small business are afraid of the “C” word thinking that corporate philanthropy applies only to big business. But small businesses have an advantage by being closer to the needs of their local communities and thus being able to help these causes in more immediate and direct ways. Small businesses also think that they do not have the financial resources to give back to their communities. Your list show that there are so many creative ways that they too can help beyond cash donations.
