A Mother and a Business Owner

Mother’s Day is right around the corner and what better time to recognize the various mothers/small business owners that inhabit this country.

Undoubtedly, as a society, we have come a long way, from women not having the write to vote or even own property, to a country that, in 2002 was home to 6.5 million women-owned businesses (28.2 percent of nonfarm U.S. firms).  Also, according to recent data from the Center for Women’s Business Research, the number of women-owned businesses has grown in excess of 40 percent over the past 10 years.

In the recent past, women often had to choose between motherhood and having a career, now plenty of women have families and run businesses simultaneously, often using the skills learned through one to achieve more success in the other.  For example as a parent, it is important to be a leader, as children learn from example.  In addition to providing your children with the necessities they need to survive, it is crucial to offer them support, encouragement and give them the tools that will help them mature into capable and independent adults.  Likewise, as a small business owner, you must be a leader to your employees and provide them with the basic necessities to perform their jobs. However, a good business owner goes above and beyond that, to motivate employees, so that they can be trusted to perform their jobs properly, even when not under direct supervision.  Therefore, it could be said that business ownership and motherhood go hand-in-hand.

Recently, the term mompreneur has been coined to describe mothers who own businesses.  The invention of this word alone is a sign of the increase of mom-business owners.
