A New Way to Use Social Media

Small businesses have already been taking advantage of advertising opportunities offered by social networking sites like Facebook and Myspace.  Until recently, however, in order to promote their businesses on twitter, entrepreneurs had to garner up followers, tweet about sales, events, discounts and the likes and hope to get “retweeted.”

Now, however, Twitter has unveiled its new “promoted tweets” platform, which has the potential to help both Twitter and small business owners profit.  Based on various reports, this is how promoted tweets will work:

• Promoted tweets will appear based on searched key words
• They will appear at the top of the page along with an indication that the tweet is promoted
• Pay will be base on a CPM model.  However, if the promoted tweet is not performing, it will be pulled and the advertiser will not pay
• The payment plans/systems will evolve as Twitter gauges how promoted tweets pan out

Many small business owners have already been using twitter to boost and promote their businesses and large businesses such as Starbucks and Best Buy have begun to use promoted tweets.
